This is an exciting new role to build upon the recognition of our achievements to date, by elevating the awareness of the Trust and our many partners. We expect that National Geographic will release their documentary in Autumn 2024 about Shackleton and the expedition organised by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust that found the wreck of Endurance in the Weddell Sea. This is likely to lead to heightened awareness of and interest in our work, which will appeal to applicants with a real interest in maritime heritage and, ideally, the Falkland Islands and/or the South Atlantic/Southern Ocean.
As COO you will serve as the first point of contact representing FMHT in, we envisage, an increasingly high-profile public manner. You will report to the Chair of Trustees, working collaboratively with the Trustees. You will also collaborate with a variety of charities, institutions and agencies, all with shared interests in our work.
We are seeking an energetic ‘all-rounder’ – a proven leadership professional who will roll their sleeves up and deliver. You will have outstanding communication and liaison skills, be skilful in raising funds and engaging sponsors together with sound financial and contract management experience. Drawing from your previous experience you will help to design, implement and deliver our operational and commercial objectives. Highly self-motivated, you will possess the vision, energy and drive to help create and to implement sustainable strategies for the Trust.
Short-term, the overarching purpose of the COO position is to set-up the Trust office, virtual and/or physical; to define and then to implement appropriate systems thereby enabling the Trust to deliver its charitable objects compliantly. This will entail producing the annual report, submitting all statutory documents and managing financial and contractual issues.
As you become familiar with Trust projects, you will assume a more central role, bringing forward ideas for further Trust activities and options for sourcing additional funding. We anticipate the release of the National Geographic film about the Endurance will provide the immediate springboard to enable you to pursue opportunities for exhibitions, events and the promotion of the Trust through social media platforms.
You will build upon established relationships with related UK charities, the Museum and Archives in the Falklands, Falkland Islands Government, and the Government Office in the UK; UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) and other partners in the Conservation Management Plan for Endurance; Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), South Georgia Heritage Trust, Dundee Heritage Trust, Shackleton Museum Athy, Fram Museum Oslo etc. You will also forge sustainable new relationships – raising awareness and funds. You will promote and attend events, especially those relating to Shackleton and maritime heritage in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean.
Longer-term, you will create and manage relationships, strengthen and enhance the public awareness of our work, and those of our partners, securing ongoing funding to ensure the sustainability of the Trust.
