Job Details

Fred Thomas MP, Member of Parliament for Plymouth Moor View, is looking for 2 enthusiastic and organised people to join his Plymouth office as full time caseworkers (37.5 hours per week)

Fred was elected as the Labour MP for Plymouth Moor View in July 2024. He will have an office in a central location within the constituency, from which his team will be based. The team will be hybrid-working between home and the office. All staff will be expected to be able to attend the constituency office to work. Appropriate support and resources will be provided for home working.

Flexibility to work on the occasional evening and weekend will be required, which will be compensated with time off in lieu.

Responsibilities will include:

• Dealing with a large number of standard queries by telephone, email or face-to-face
• Managing and progressing a varied portfolio of casework, including logging cases, taking appropriate actions promptly, monitoring progress
• Drafting enquiries to government agencies on behalf of constituents
• Policy research on complex issues
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant guidelines/legislation as appropriate in dealing with casework
• Competent use of IT including casework management systems, Microsoft Office package, email, internet
• Accompanying the MP to advice surgeries and visits in Plymouth

Fred is looking for someone who has:

• Strong written, communication and analytical skills with a good telephone manner and attention to detail. Excellent command of written English is required to produce high quality correspondence, representing the MP in letters and emails
• Experience of keeping professional notes and accurate records
• Ability to carry out tasks quickly and to a high standard
• Excellent research, writing and communication skills
• A good knowledge of Plymouth and the services available to local people
• Ability to work independently, show initiative and work well as part of a wider team, demonstrating a positive and flexible attitude

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
