Do you have the ability to work independently in a challenging environment and have excellent problem-solving skills?  The South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) are looking for a Regional Technical Surveillance Technician to support covert crime investigation across the South West, bringing offenders to justice and protecting the public.


In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Undertake sensitive and covert deployments in compliant environments in order to install authorised technical surveillance equipment in homes, commercial premises and vehicles. This includes visual imagery, technical observation points, static and discrete CCTV, and asset tracking.
  • Assist with the day to day running of the Technical Surveillance Unit (TSU).
  • Carry out planning and preparation of techniques and equipment to achieve objectives.
  • Develop risk assessments, method statements and carry out technical feasibility studies for consideration of Authorising Officers and Chief Officers
  • Provide advice regarding technical surveillance tactics and equipment

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • You will need a qualification in electronics, radio or telecommunications or relevant workplace experience and ability to demonstrate up to date knowledge of relevant technologies.
  • You have knowledge or experience of at least one of the following: video, audio, optics, alarm, telecommunications, location and positioning equipment, information communication technology, mobile telephony, IP (Internet Protocol) or WIFI technology
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to advise and influence to achieve objectives
  • You have the ability to work autonomously in a challenging environment and make decisions balancing operational considerations against risk, with excellent problem solving skills and the ability to develop technical and practical solutions.
  • You can demonstrate understanding of relevant legislation in connection with technical surveillance techniques
  • You hold a full driving licence or you are able to travel around the region by other means
