HM Tower of London

Yeoman Warders are civilian employees of Historic Royal Palaces and are appointed in their ceremonial role under the authority of the Constable of HM Tower of London. They are also Extraordinary Members of the Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard, the Sovereign’s ceremonial bodyguards.

To apply for this position you must:

1. Be a former Warrant Officer, class 1 or 2, (or the equivalent rank in other services) and in exceptional circumstances, a Staff Sergeant, from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Marines.
2. Hold the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal
3. Have served within the regular armed services for at least 22 years

Purpose of this role:
Yeoman Warders of HM Tower of London are to practically deliver the HRP Cause and Principles
in order to generate an outstanding visitor experience.
Yeoman Warders are civilian employees of HRP, working through their line management to the
Tower Director (also known as the Governor); they are ceremonially appointed through the Lord
Chamberlain’s office and placed under command the Constable and Tower Officers. They are
ambassadors for the Royal Palace and its history and should behave in accordance with HRP rules
and guidelines as these are the authorised operating requirements of the Royal Palace.

Main Customers of this job:
• Visitors
• The Governor, Deputy Governor, and Tower Operations Manager.
• The Chief Yeoman Warder, Yeoman Gaoler and Yeoman Serjeants.
• The Communications Department
• Functions and Events Team

What you will be doing in your role:
• Conduct oneself in a manner that delivers HRP’s Cause and upholds the traditions of the
Yeoman Body.
• Ensure that every visitor to the Tower of London has a safe and enjoyable visit.
• Give guided tours to visitors and VIPs and assist visitors by answering questions of a
historical or general nature about the Tower of London and willingly have photographs
taken with our visitors.
• Implement whatever security and health and safety instructions are issued by the Tower’s
senior management.
• Prevent damage to, or theft of, articles or other property within the Tower of London.
• Promote the other Palaces within the Historic Royal Palaces during day-to-day contact with
visitors and make visitors aware of the benefits of HRP membership.
• Promote Historic Royal Palaces at external events, as directed by the Chief Yeoman Warder.
• Take part in Ceremonial parades, as detailed by the Governor or Chief Yeoman Warder.
• Volunteer to assist the Events Team at Corporate Functions, within the Tower as detailed by
the Chief Yeoman Warder.
• Conduct whatever training is directed, including first aid at work.

Key outputs of this Job valued by customers are:
• Outstanding customer service to stir the spirit of every visitor
• An in-depth knowledge of HM Tower of London and its environs.
• A complete understanding of Tower history and Royal genealogy.
• The ability to respond to an incident and implement incident response plans, with a
minimum of supervision.
Other:
• Ensure that all children/young people and vulnerable adults are safe and protected whilst
onsite and to be fully aware of Safeguarding reporting procedures should an incident or
concern be witnessed.
• To undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by your manager
