Do you want to serve your community, save lives, and make a real difference?
At Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, we are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Our On-Call Firefighters are the backbone of our emergency response team, providing critical support during fires, accidents, and other emergencies.
Our emergency responses and community safety activities are delivered from 83 fire stations based throughout Devon and Somerset.
We have a mix of wholetime, on-call, and volunteer stations spread across the two counties. On-call stations are sometimes called retained stations too.
We have two wholetime stations and ten stations with both wholetime and on-call crews. We have 69 on-call stations – the largest number in England. Two of our stations are run by volunteers.
You might be surprised to know that on-call firefighters make up 90% of emergency cover in the UK. They’re an invaluable part of society.
Whilst this event will be held at Barnstaple Fire Station, information provided and opportunities available will apply across the whole of Devon and Somerset.
The event will take place in the morning and last around three hours. You will need trainers and comfortable clothes.
There will be an initial introduction and information about the role. You will then wear personal protective equipment before having a go at a breathing apparatus guideline exercise. You can also have a look around the fire engine and speak to on-call firefighters to gain an overview of the role.
There will also be a fitness workshop where you can get hands-on with some of the equipment to gain a better understanding of the strength and fitness expectations.
