The Royal Marines Association Extends Gratitude to Remarkable Individuals. 

In the current economic and social climate, it is heartening to see individuals who embody the spirit of selflessness and dedication. The Royal Marines Association (RMA) celebrated such exceptional individuals during the Corps Family Weekend 2023 by awarding the prestigious Chair’s Commendations. This honour is reserved for those members of the Association who have gone above and beyond for the benefit of the Corps Family, and it is with immense pleasure that we extend our gratitude to these remarkable people. 

The RMA, under the stewardship of Chair Paul Deacon, stands as a testament to the enduring camaraderie and unwavering support that characterises the Royal Marines community. The Chair’s Commendations recognize the dedication and commitment of individuals who have played a pivotal role in fostering this sense of belonging and support. 

John Peel – RMA North Devon 

John Peel, the Chair of RMA North Devon, exemplifies the values of camaraderie and service that the Royal Marines hold dear. His unwavering commitment to the Corps Family has been a source of inspiration for many. Whether he is organising local events or supporting veterans in need, John’s dedication is a shining example of the spirit of the Royal Marines. He has been an unyielding fundraising champion, and is one of, if not the, most prolific fundraiser that RMA – The Royal Marines Charity has. 

Mike Mizen – RMA Norfolk 

Mike Mizen from RMA Norfolk has consistently shown his dedication to the Corps Family. His tireless efforts in organizing community events and providing a Shooting Range to spread awareness of the Corps has not gone unnoticed. Mike embodies the principle that the Corps Family is there for one another through thick and thin. The Branch have supported the Charity and inspired the next generation to consider joining the Royal Marines.  

Alan Smith – RMA Merseyside 

Alan Smith, Secretary of RMA Merseyside, has displayed a remarkable commitment to spreading the message of RMA – The Royal Marines Charity and Corps history. His work in organizing Zeebrugge Parade has helped pass on the rich history and traditions of the Corps to future generations. Alan’s dedication ensures that the Corps’ heritage remains alive and well. The Branch have also raised a considerable amount of money for the Charity. 

Les Wright – RMA Romford 

Les Wright’s involvement with RMA Romford has had a profound impact on the local community. His dedication to charitable activities and fundraising efforts has not only benefited the Corps Family but has also extended to the wider community. Les sets an exemplary standard for what it means to be a Royal Marine. We would like to recognise the relentless efforts and initiatives that Le, and RMA Romford, have undertaken to raise vital funds for RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, supporting those that need it most.  

Mick Shannon – RMA Plymouth, outgoing National Standard Bearer

Mick Shannon’s role as the outgoing National Standard Bearer for RMA Plymouth has been marked by a deep sense of duty and honour. Carrying the standard is a symbol of pride and tradition, and Mick’s tenure has upheld these values with distinction. He has paraded the National Standard at the funeral of Prince Philip, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, and the coronation of King Charles III. His service as the bearer has exemplified the dedication that is synonymous with the Royal Marines. 

Sam Leighton – Winner of the 2023 National Standard Bearer Competition 

Sam Leighton’s victory in the 2023 National Standard Bearer Competition is a testament to his commitment to excellence. Competing against the best, Sam displayed not only exceptional skill but also the spirit of camaraderie that defines the Royal Marines. His victory is a source of pride for the entire Corps Family. 

These individuals, through their actions and unwavering commitment, have embodied the core values of the Royal Marines Association. They have demonstrated that being a part of the Corps Family goes beyond mere membership – it is about actively contributing to the well-being and cohesion of the community. 

As we celebrate the Corps Family Weekend 2023, let us remember that the spirit of the Royal Marines is not confined to the times of conflict but thrives in the hearts and actions of individuals like these commendable recipients. They remind us that the essence of the Royal Marines transcends time and place, forging bonds that endure for a lifetime.
