Every year, Commando Training Centre (CTC) hosts a variety of engaging events during Corps Family Weekend, a celebration of camaraderie and tradition that brings together Royal Marines, their families, and the larger military community.

Among the many competitions and exhibitions, the Standard Bearer Competition stands out as a testament to honour, discipline, and precision. In the most recent event, five exceptional entrants vied for the title of National Standard Bearer, and in the end, Sam Leighton emerged as the victor, displaying unwavering dedication and skill.

The prestigious title of National Standard Bearer was passed on from Mick Shannon who has paraded the National Standard at the funeral of Prince Philip, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, and the coronation of King Charles III. Mick has represented the Royal Marines Association to the highest level throughout his tenure.

During the competition, Sam’s ability to maintain composure under pressure and his attention to detail were key factors that set him apart. His uniform was immaculate, his drill movements were precise, and his flag-handling skills were second to none. These standout performances left an impression on the judges and secured his victory.
