‘You have been a great support to me in my darkest hours. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.’

Derek is a 60-year-old Royal Marines veteran who left the service in the 70’s having served in the Corps for six years. He suffered ill-health for many years after leaving that resulted in him having his lower leg amputated during 2021.  The accommodation he was living in was unfit for purpose – and it was totally unsafe for him to continue living in.

He had nowhere else to go and was in desperate need, with no one to turn to for assistance. After approaching RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, we put him in contact with his local housing authority and helped him through the lengthy application process in requesting a move to a new property that was more suitable for his needs.

Our Health & Wellbeing team also put him in touch with another military organisation which was able to add weight to his request. Eventually, everything came together – and much to Derek’s delight – he moved into a bungalow in 2022, stating he was ‘chuffed to bits’.
